2010 Race Season

TK Racing/Picotte Racing 2010 Race Report for Daytona 200

After a long cold winter in Canada the team soldiered through a large snow storm to make their way down to Daytona for the 69th running of the Daytona 200. After some track time during the CCS/ASRA race weekend Wednesday afternoon, the team got down to business with practicing for both the American SuperBike class and the Daytona SportBike class which is what Brett would run in the prestigious Daytona 200 race under the lights Friday night. Although the team had the advantage of knowing the set up for Brett's 2009 Suzuki GSX-R's, the Dunlop tires were new which would completely change the way the bike would be set up.

The practice and pre-qualifying sessions went fairly well as Brett was able to firmly establish himself inside the top ten in both American SuperBike and Daytona SportBike classes. Qualifying for American SuperBike saw Brett unable to improve significantly on his lap times and he settled for 9th on the grid. Daytona SportBike qualifying was run at night under cool conditions and saw Brett comfortable with his bike and set up enabling him to set the 8th fastest time putting him in an excellent second row position for the start of the Daytona 200.

Thursdays American SuperBike race one saw Brett get a good start and come out in the first couple of laps in 6th place. Unable to stay on the pace of the front five racers, Brett found himself in a battle for 6th with Chris Ulrich and Taylor Knapp. Unfortunately, Brett's bike suffered a race ending mechanical failure on the sixth lap of the fifteen lap race. Thursday night saw the Picotte Racing Team working hard as they replace the motor in Brett's GSX-R 1000 and prepare his GSX-R 600 for the 200 mile race on Friday.

Fridays American SuperBike race two saw Brett get a 10th place start. By lap two Brett had moved up to 8th only to be pushed back to 9th when John Hopkins got by him a lap later. Brett was able to stay on the back of this nine rider freight train for several laps. John Hopkins then retired in front of Brett with a mechanical leaving Brett in 8th place but back far enough from the lead group to not be able to stay in the draft. At the half way point Brett was approximately seven seconds off the lead group but five seconds ahead of 9th place leaving him with an uneventful but very solid 8th place finish.

Under the lights at the start of the Daytona 200 Brett got a great start coming through the horseshoe in 4th place. Unfortunately a multi-rider crash brought out the red flag and a restart was in order. Off the restart Brett did not get quite as good a launch and came through the horseshoe in 7th place. A seven rider freight train at the front ensued with Brett passing Cory West in the chicane for 6th. Kevin Coghlan then took West's position at the rear of the seven rider freight train as they pulled away from the pack. A couple of laps later Brett was in 5th place when the draft sucked him in to the chicane much faster than he was expecting. Instead of trying to make the chicane and crashing, Brett stood the bike up and road through the chicane safely dropping back to 7th place. The mistake not only cost him a couple of positions but put him three seconds back of the lead group and out of the all important draft. With something to prove Brett dug deep and even without the benefit of the daft, set the fastest lap of the race for the next three consecutive laps. On the back of the lead pack Brett brought his GSX-R in for the first pit stop on lap eighteen. An awesome pit stop by the Picotte Racing Team saw Brett back on the track quickly. By this time the top seven lead group had all pulled in for their first pit stops meaning the group was now spread out. Josh Herrin and Dane Westby battled for the lead five seconds ahead of the Danny Eslick and Steve Rapp's battle for 3rd. Brett was in 5th place three seconds back of the 3rd place battle and about fifteen seconds ahead of Kevin Coghlan who was in 6th. On lap thirty-one just five laps before his second pit stop, Brett tucked the front end of his GSX-R crashing in the chicane. Unhurt Brett jumped to his bike only to find the front break line had tore off in the crash ending his outstanding run in his first Daytona 200.
