Update: Brett McCormick
Saskatoon SK Canada May 2, 2012
Brett recovering at home!
Brett McCormick and family would like everyone to know he is at home recovering from injuries sustained at the WSBK round in Assen, The Netherlands.
Following a high speed crash which saw him tangle up with his bike, Brett was expertly transported to hospital in Assen. Examination showed a broken C5 in his neck as well as several cracked vertebrae in the middle back region. Also, a broken thumb, a concussion and a severely bruised face were a result of the unfortunate crash. A visit Sunday night from the Effenbert-Liberty team including team owner Mario Bertuccio did much to raise Brett's spirits!
Following a few days of observation Brett was transported back to Canada via an Air Ambulance which was arranged by OneWorld Assist, Brett's insurance company. His need to maintain a laying position ruled out commercial flight.
Arriving in Saskatoon Friday, Brett was taken straight to hospital where expert doctors backed up the initial diagnosis. Surgery was performed to repair his thumb and he was able to come home to begin his recovery.
Diagnosis is excellent, as the broken C5 did not displace and will not require surgery. As well the cracked vertebrae will heal without intervention. Brett will wear a neck brace until the C5 is healed and then undergo physical therapy prior to his return to the track.
Brett and family would like to thank the staff at the Wilhelmina Hospital in Assen for the wonderful care received there. As well the staff of OneWorld Assist and Life Flight International for getting him home safely and comfortably. Also enough can't be said for Shoei Hemets and Alpinestar. Without the best protection Brett's injuries might have been much more severe.
Brett's move to Europe has provided him with a second home. The Effenbert-Liberty team has quickly become a second family for Brett, and their support before and after the accident show what incredible people they are! Brett misses them and is anxious to return to rejoin his family at Effenbert!
